“It wasn’t just about what we read. We needed to experience it.” That sentence captures what many parents go through when choosing a kindergarten. Website information, the curriculum, and recommendations all matter — but the final decision is often shaped by first-hand experience of the place itself.
In this interview, Martin and Zuzana Ruman talk about how they chose a kindergarten for their child — their children now attend the Andílek Montessori schools. They share what they weighed while choosing a kindergarten, what they paid attention to during visits, what ultimately tipped the decision, and how they see that choice now, with some distance.
Their experience shows that parents don’t need to search for one specific educational approach alone. Just as important is the overall feel of the environment and how the kindergarten actually runs day to day. How do the adults communicate with the children? How do they respond to their needs? How much room do children have for independence — and how do they seem to feel in that environment?
A personal visit, and the chance to watch everyday classroom life for a while, can make a real difference. Parents get to see children at work, sense the atmosphere, and observe how children and adults communicate with one another. That’s when the information from a website or an open day turns into something concrete — and parents can better picture whether their own child would feel at home there.
Choosing a kindergarten isn’t where the process ends. Parents keep checking their decision in everyday life afterward — noticing how their child talks about the kindergarten, how they engage with it, whether they’re forming relationships, and whether their confidence keeps growing.
The wider school environment and the community around it can matter just as much. A good kindergarten stops being just a place a child goes to each morning — it can become a natural part of the whole family’s everyday life.
There’s no single kindergarten that’s the best choice for every child and every family. That’s why, when choosing one, it helps to look beyond the curriculum and practical details — at how people communicate, the relationships, the atmosphere, and how the place actually runs day to day.
If you’re currently choosing a kindergarten, a personal visit can tell you more than any list of facts. Give yourself time to observe the environment, ask questions, and notice how you and your child feel in it.

When people hear the word bullying, many picture only the most serious situations: a child who no longer wants to go to school, visible harm, fear, tears — something impossible to miss. But bullying usually doesn't start that visibly.

Every child learns a little differently. Some need more time, others need movement, a quieter space, or a clearer plan. For neurodivergent children, these differences are often more pronounced. How can we support them in a Montessori environment without doing for them what they can gradually learn to do on their own?
