Montessori Adolescent: inspiration for adolescent education

The Montessori Adolescent project brought together Montessori schools, training centres and AMI from five European countries. Together we focused on the education of young people aged 12 to 18 and on how to create an environment that meets their developmental needs.

Montessori Schools Andílek coordinated the project. Our educators took part in six international meetings in Prague, Austria, Sweden, the United Kingdom and Amsterdam, and completed the AMI Montessori Orientation to Adolescent Studies in Sätila, Sweden. At every meeting we returned to Maria Montessori’s texts and discussed unstructured time and the work cycle, real work and maximum effort, control of error, and freedom and responsibility.

These conversations gave rise to the methodology Montessori adolescent programme inspiration. This collection of essays by experienced adolescent guides covers the four planes of development, the human tendencies, work for adolescents, where a school should be located and what its environment should offer, and the role of the adult. The methodology is available in English, Czech and German.

The project also created an inventory of adolescent programmes in Europe. Of the 43 organisations that answered our survey, 26 already run an adolescent community and 16 are planning one. Maps of the programmes are available at montessoriadolescent.net.

The project ran from September 2015 to August 2017 and was funded by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union.
